Time to share what happened with me and UPS--this is the first time I had a problem with shipping.

So I decide to buy that nice Sony G520 during Dell's 20% off promotion. The monster comes today and what do I notice? I notice that the corners of the box are messed up and the tape off of 1 side of the box is totally off.

I decide to open up the box anyway, and the first thing I notice is that the front bezel is bent on both the left hand side and right hand side. Anyway, I decide to plug in and fire up the monitor. Immediately, I noticed that the entire left side has a beautiful Smurf-like tint to it. Moreover, the text is...let's just say that it's extremely blurry. Basically, UPS did a wonderful job killing a $700 monitor.

But don't worry, the nice folks at Dell decided to overnight a new monitor and let me send my old one back (on them) free...I don't even have to leave my apartment. I just wait for the new one to come...send the old one with the delievery guy (not UPS...Airborne) <---hope I have better luck with them.

I have had bad luck with UPS for the last couple of years. They tend to leave Computers on the front porch in plain view at my house which is in a new construction area. All kinds of people coming and going.

I have been tempted to call them and ask where my computer is, since it is clearly marked, "Signature Required" on the box.

I don't like UPS either...I've had 3 bad incidents with them...this one was the kicker..

I sent someone $100 for some used bookshelf speakers that I was going to use as surrounds for my little home theater setup (paradigm atoms). He shipped them via UPS....so anyway, the package comes 2 days late, and I noticed the box is in bad shape..then I go to sign for the package and there is $60 in fees that I have to pay. So I told him to get lost and come back tomorrow to see if I can work this out with the guy I bought it from. Turns out UPS charges an arm and a leg to get stuff over the border...funny how no other couriers (or the USPS) seem to do this. There was $22 "import fees", plus they charged me 15% sales tax on the value written on the package, plus another set fee that goes up depending on the packages value. WTF. ok and here is the real kicker... the speakers are DAMAGED. Like beat up to hell. You'd have to drop this from 10 stories to do this kind of damage. The bass/midrange drivers were both PUNCTURED and stuff was shaking around inside. The guy packed it well too. Abslutely unbelievable...it's like they went out of their way to damage it. Fortunately this guy was a super trader, and he replaced the speakers (he works in a audio store) and felt bad about those $60 fees and sent me a 6 foot monster cable toslink/optical cable.

I've received about 15 USPS packages and 1 FedEx and all arrived in perfect condition. Man I hate UPS :|

I had 2 cpu's stolen by a UPS driver before.

I ordered a Thunderbird-900(on a tuesday) and I needed it badly so I had it over nighted via UPS. unfortunatly for me the nexty day when it didn't show, I called up the company I ordered the cpu from and they said it went out yesterday. I checked UPS's website and they said it was delivered on wednesday at 12:45PM. I called UPS and they said that it was signed for by the addressee(me). I know i can be forgetfull but I think I would remember a UPS guy delivering a desperatly needed CPU to me.

I called the company I ordered the CPU from and they said they would file a claim and send me a new CPU that day. Thursday comes around and no CPU. I actually saw the UPS guy drive down my street stop in front of the neighbors place, and then he drove off. So at 5pm still no package.

To make my long nightmare short. The driver was arrested for stealing packages, including mine.

I had to goto a local store and pay 2x what it cost me online to get that CPU thursday.

I will never send anything UPS. Any online stores I deal with have to ship Fedex or Airborne.

UPS sucks, I send stuff under 2lbs through them and most the time they don't screw it up, but when they do, I end up having to trace where the package went and find out it's on the floor in the "delivery" room or something like that.

Shipping monitor through UPS = soccer ball, 100% serious. That's cool though that Dell has taken care of you.

When I was in college a couple of years ago, I used to work for UPS as an unloader. Basically, you had to unload a huge semi truck full of boxes/packages onto their incoming deck. Well they would always rush you so you are constantly unloading and basically you didn't care what was in the box, as long as it got out. I can remember just tossing monitors as far as I can out of the truck as well as other stuff.
Hope that helps :)

huh, I have gotten a whole sh*tload of stuff sent to me via UPS - computer cases, monitors, and many components. Never had a problem. Maybe it depends on the driver?

heres a copy of something I posted somewhere else

Title was: I have been robbed

<< No not by just 1 person, but a whole company that is worth millions. I had sold my asus v7700 deluxe video card to someone in the US. I went down to mail boxes etc here to get it shipped and payed for UPS ground. Well it is now a month later and UPS has lost my package and apparently I cannot receive my money back now. Anyone out there, DO NOT ship with UPS or use mail boxes etc. It's to bad I don't feel like typing out all the fine print they have you sign on the back of the form at MBE, but if you sign it, your basically screwed. So please people use other shipping services and stay away from MBE at all costs. I really hope UPS enjoy's their video card and screwing me over for $220 dollars. I guess to run a good business these day's you aren't supposed to do what you get payed for. >>

As you can see I love UPS to death and wish them the best in the future.

Uhh... I suppose that happens to all shipping companies as well as their schedule is really tight? Just a thought.

I only ship Fedex. They even provide the boxes. UPS quality has gone WAY down. I was in a UPS warehouse with one of their supervisors as he desperately looked for my 'lost' package up in MN, and I saw them kick boxes when they were t'd off, and I even saw a large tall box used like a puncing bag. The Supervisor said 'Those were boxes designed for them to take stress out on'. If that is true, then WHY did they get put on a semi with the other packages? And Come on, they use boxes for punching bags. UPS must be really cheap, or Full of SH@t.

IMHO. BTW, Fedex Ground is about the same price, and now delivers to residences.

Yep, it's Dell policy to next day parts with return shipping (or we don't bother requesting it back in the case of things like cables, mice/keyboards, etc.. Things that aren't worth shipping). If it was under 30 days since order though, they'll probably have to do an EXG (exchange, usually new) instead of a POS (Parts Only Service - refurbished goods).

The next day may have been a misquote, as an EXG's lead time is often 3-5 days, although they ship out next day as soon as possible (they quote 3-5 days due to possible backorder or difficulty in finding the part new, etc). But I'd expect it by the end of the week at the latest.

The return process for it will probably be you get the box, the driver leaves (they don't wait for you to repackage it). You repackage the damaged monitor, slap on the airbill (which may come seperately, even USPS first class, depending on if they do a POS or EXG. They can't throw the airbill in the box on an EXG, becuase that breaks the "newness" of the monitor, and they have to call it refurbished. POSes are already labeled refurbished (which could mean as little as it was shipped out and returned by purchaser, never used. Or even was put in a system, then the order was canceled), add the DPS (reference) number the tech should have given you, and call the 1-800 number in the documentation. Airborne comes to pick it up, and you're done.

(In case you haven't figured it out, I used to work for Dell :) Former L2 - Dimension HSB)

I think I've heard of about 5 situations where Airborne damaged a part, out of hundreds I sent out, and thousands of dispatches I fixed for other techs.

I agree, UPS does suck. I've had lots of stuff delivered by them, and have yet to have anything come in undamaged. Well, maybe I shouldn't say that. My stuff was ok, but the shipping boxes always come in w/ big holes punched in them. Fedex does much better, in my oppinion.
