I double box, and I use styrofoam between inner box and outer box. The unit in the inner box is also bubble wrapped.

I've done it before.

It's basically done everything by the phone when I filed a claim

They'll send someone to pick up the damaged item. with the packaging and all.
I believe you gotta send/fax them a copy of the receipt for the value of the item.

and just wait for the check.

Been there, done that. That's one of the reasons I will never knowingly enter into a deal that involves UPS ever again.

They will begin with trying to make you out as a scammer. By the time they get done, you'll wonder if maybe you are.

I've had much better luck in general with fedex ground, although their claims process is a real pain as well.

I sold a Yamaha RX-V1050 Reciever a few years back.

Packaged it in a new weight rated box with 6" foam around all sides.

Box arrived to buyer SEVERELY mangled...unit seemed ok, but the lights did not work.

I put a claim in and they would not honor it saying it was shipped in a used box with insufficent packaging.

Being I used a Pak-N-Ship they were technically the 'shipper' so alot of this had to go through them. The package was returned and they tried another claim. The claim was denied each time for various odd reasons with most of them being UPS did not find a 'computer' being shipped.

This went on 3 months until I just picked the unit up. It turned out to be a simple bulb that Yamaha overnighted to me free. I am still using it today, but just purchased a HTR-5960 so it's at it's end of life here :)

UPS was problematic a few more time in my history of shipping/recieving. I avoid using them whenever possible. I have yet to have a box arrive undamaged. Their non-ground service is a bit better, but not drastically.

FedEx I have had relatively easy claims and most of my boxes have arrived in nearly perfect condition.

I have also found depending on what UPS/FedEx hubs you go through determines a lot of what your packages look like.

UPS is well known for destroying packages and now I hear that they are one of the worst shipping companies when it comes to insurance claims???
Man do I had UPS even more. FedEx claim was somewhat of a pain, but I eventually got it. FedEx rates are also much cheaper than UPS most of the times. Don't know about 80lbs items though.
Check out DHL too and see if they have better rates. As a smaller company perhaps they have a much more efficient insurance claim process, but I would assume it would be somewhat difficult.
