I just got something from Amazon today via UPS. One weird thing, the box had clearly been opened and sloppily taped back together when it arrived. The Amazon UPS sticker which was placed over the box flap seam on top was clearly cut down the middle and the plastic bubble pack inside was cut and deflated. All I bought was a garden hose, so it was still intact.

Not that I'm paranoid, but I'm getting suspicous of UPS. Could they be like some stories I've heard about the Post Office with employees stealing stuff that looks like it might be valuable? The box I received looked just like the size of box for electronics like a DVD player, stereo components, etc.

Anyone else have this happen?

A box which clearly says Amazon on the outside and Amazon on the shipping label? Last time I checked Amazon wasn't selling explosives or guns. What reason could they possibly have for checking this package?

UPS sucks!!!

But, fir3wir3, it's being shipped from an Amazon warehouse. I'm sure UPS gets so much crap from their warehouses, they know all the locations by heart. I'm sure it's one of two situations:

A) The package looked valuable, so someone at UPS decided to exercise his or her "right" to "inspect" it.

2) They were playing good ol' UPS tackle football with your package as the ball, and the package busted open when someone spiked it after scoring a TD to tie it up late in the fourth quarter. They then did a miserable job of taping back it back up so that they could continue playing.

As you can tell, I don't like UPS too much. :p

I really believe it was opened with the intent of theft.

It's not that easy to get an Amazon sticker (you have to have an automated system from UPS which has your shipper ID number in it). Also this package was sent to me from a warehouse that is across the country. It would take a lot of coordination and just doesn't make sense.

After reading up on some articles showing how the biggest fraud ring was discovered by the FBI at UPS a couple of years ago (employees stole ~ $750,000 of merchandise), I wouldn't put it past some employee to take a look inside.

BTW, the box was in perfect shape. It had just been opened on the top and sloppily retaped on the top.

slightly different case but do you realize that if you mail out the package from UPS mailing center they force you to open your perfectly tape box ? and they tape it again for you sloppily ?
and if you mail it from mailboxetc (or other place) you don't have to open your package.
what's the deal here ? mailboxetc give it to UPS and they open it anyway ?

Adul - The hose was $1.00 at the lawn and garden patio blowout sale going on this week at Amazon.

I bought a ton of stuff and it's all being shipped seperately.

I sure hope some UPS employee doesn't get their eye on my $4.00 super deluxe bypass pruners (that retail at my local Lowe's store for ~ $30) which are supposed to arrive next week. That will really suck!!

It's very possible that the tape was broken accidentaly, as well as stolen. As a former employee of a UPS competitor, I can tell you that the packages are not treated very carefully. It's not necessarily becuase the people that work there suck, it's the workload they have to handle in a short amount of time. I can't say for sure about UPS, but where I worked we were not given enough time to load trucks and be careful at the same time.
