I have a very solid, trouble-free six year old APC Back Ups Pro 1100VA 120V whose battery apparently needs to be replaced (battery light is on). The battery is a BB Battery BP12-12 (12v, 12AH/20HR) (two are required). I would like to make the most cost effective move. A replacement from APC is around $125 I am willing to put anything that will work in this thing... or perhaps the best move is a new UPS?

Thanks for any input.

Thats a pretty good run for a ups battery. You should be able to google for that model and find dozens of outfits selling replacement batteries. Generally they are better than replacing the whole unit (cheaper and better for the environment)

I agree with Bill. It's seldom cost-effective to replace the battery with an original APC. But there's tons of third-party batteries.

Those are good UPS's and it may be worth replacing the battery. I use Portable Power Systems They have reasonable prices on good batteries. I've found that Panasonic batteries tend to last much longer than most other brands. I've had bad luck with some of the cheap brands like Powersonic and Universal Battery. I had a UB battery that would overcharge in my Back-UPS Pro 650 and vent (which is very bad).

Also, be sure to check your local battery suppliers. There's a place near me that specializes in commercial truck batteries that also happened to carry the SLA batteries that fit my APC SmartUPS 1400. $60 for a pair. And they recycled the old battery for free.

You should also replace any MOVs (surge limiting components) in the UPS at the same time as they wear out too.

Thanks Zepper. I have found four varistors, three on the mainboard and one on the telephone line protection board.
