UPS Back-up power protection: Mandatory or Optional?

I've been looking to get one lately, since I have invested so much into my computer equipment. Who uses them? Are they mandatory? I don't need anything heavy duty that will keep my computer going after a power outage for hours. Maybe just long enough to shut it down. Does it really provide a cleaner power stream?...and does that even matter? I have my components plugged into a good surge protector.

I just got a ups system for my new rig and the next night it stormed really bad and power went out but i was able to shut down the cmputer the right way since it was on the backup system thank goodness. IMO it is well worth it. Ill try and get the link up to the one i have.
