UPS and Power Surges

Should I connect a UPS to a Power Surge (APC)? I would assume that any decent UPS would have a Power Surge Inside itself.

Most UPSs do have a built in surge supressor, but in general they are pretty weak.

If you already have a decent surge protector, the chances are it will be several times more powerful than one in the UPS, so getting rid of it for the UPS will be a significant downgrade.

Just remember that if you do want to use a UPS and a surge protector - you should plug the surge protector into the mains, and the UPS into the surge protector - not the other way around.

I suppose I'd connect the devices I don't really need like speakers and the such to the Surge Protector...

Wall Outlet - Surge - UPS

Sounds good.

most UPSs that I've seen have half UPS ports, and half surge-protection only ports. It's my understanding of the way a UPS works that the need for surge supression on the UPS ports is minimal if needed at all. The whole point of having one is that your devices don't acutally run off of the power from your wall outlet. that power simply keeps your battery charged at all times, and your equipment runs off of a constant flow of clean power from the battery. I don't think that a surge would ever even make it to your computer since it would first be filtered by the battery.

You could plug an ordinary power strip (no active devices inside) into a non-backed up outlet on your UPS and then plug the stuff that doesn't need to be battery backed-up into the power strip to take advantage of the dual layer of surge/noise protection your UPS setup will offer.

Anyone have any werid sounds emitting from your computer power supply when you go onto batter backup?

My Antec Neopower is much louder and more eletrical noise but apparently it works

are you sure its from the computer PSU? On my UPS, you can hear the converter kick in... It's a pretty loud buzzing noise...

I have the comp, monitor, router, and cable modem on the UPS. Everything else (speakers, lights and printers mainly) go into a regular surge protector plugged directly into a wall outlet. My Antec PS doesnt sound any different when the ups kicks in.

Wall outlet -> surge protector -> UPS -> comp monitor etc.
Wall outlet -> surge protector -> everything else.

I need to verify this, but I swear my APC UPS installation instruction said NOT to plug the UPS into surge protector.

Yup. The APC installation manual say to plug the UPS directly into the wall, not into a surge protector or power strip.

No real reason not to plug UPS into a surge protector except to prevent some 'maroon' from accidentally switching off the power and activating the UPS for no reason... None of us here are 'maroons', are we???
