Upper Respiratory Infection in new kitten.

We picked up two new kittens today (Saturday, 10/1/05) from our local society. One is about 5-6 weeks old and acts like any normal kitten. It ate some hard food tonight, though a small amount, and seems to be doing fine.

The second kitten we picked up was only 3 or 4 weeks old. It came up to my wife immediately and she was taken with it. While it was rather young, the society assured us it would be OK to go ahead and take it home. No mother cat was with the kitten. They sad just to feed it soft food initially with some water mixed in.

We tried the soft food tonight and kitten formula with no luck. It just doesn't seem to be hungry. Maybe the kitten is still getting adjusted and would probably eat something tomorrow?

Is it something we should worry about? Any tips on getting it to eat?

We took the kitten to the vet this morning and apparently, she has an upper respiratory infection. So, she's been sick all this time and this pretty much explains the lack of interest in food. The vet also told us the kitten is about 5 or 6 weeks old, and we only thought she was 3 or 4.

She's awfully small and we guess she's been sick for a while now.

For those of your with sick kittens or cats, do they usually recover well from these type infections while young? I'm not sure what medication we're giving her (my wife went to the vet), but it's 3 times per day.

When I had a 3 week old kitten I fed it special formula for 1-2 weeks.

Bottle feed, with formula. It takes patience and time, keep at it. Have done that before with one of my black cats, she is now 16 yrs old.

your cat will get better with time, its growth may have been stunted a bit, but yes your cat will become healthy as long as you remember to give her/him the proper medicine given by the doc!!! he/she will be better in no time

A lot of cats from the shelters have upper respiratory infections. It's a us getting a cold. Mine had one too when I got her, usually takes a week or two to recover.

They are probably giving her an antibiotic, not for the infection (usually viral) but to prevent other diseases while it is weakened.

Just make sure she gets lots of water, they can get dehydrated quickly especially if they have nasal discharge.

Yes it will get better as long as you take good care of it and make SURE you give it the antibiotics that they are giving you for it. Upper Resperatory Infections are also referred as Distemper, it is something the cat could die from, so make sure you feed it well and make sure it has plenty of water.

Your kitten should be fine. Our first kitten had a URI shortly after we brought her home and she recovered just fine after we got medicine for her. Our new kitten that we just got on Saturday seems to have a URI too. It's very common in cats that come from a shelter.

Same situation here. A couple of my cats had URI's when we got them from the pound as kittens. They all recovered with no serious complications.

Because you guys caught your kittens infection early, she should be fine. Like everyone has said, it is a very common illness in shelter kittens. One of our cats was at the tail end of medication for her URI when we got her and we finished out her meds on her. We were told she had had another URI very early on in her life (before she was picked up and taken to the shelter) that ended up spreading and damaging her eyes. She is perfectly happy and healthy (though her eyesight isn't the greatest) today and is pretty tiny (she's a year old and maybe weighs 5 pounds), but whether that's from genetics, her illness(es) when she was little, or her lack of care for the first month or so of her life (she was a street kitty) we'll never know.
