Upon start the Fan turns for 0.0026 sec and Stops, System Won't Turn On - Old System

Ok guys,

Like the title said, when I press the power button the system tries to start and the fans turn on for 0.0026 sec and then the system shuts off immediately. The ONLY way for me get around it is to turn the PSU switch off for 3 minutes and turn it back on. The system then can be powered on successfully.

This is a 5 year-old system, all same components, same case, nothing has changed except that my memory sticks failed a few months ago and this problem has been going since then.

I tried the new memory stick, same problem. Tried another one, same problem.

Funny thing is, once I get it running the system is stable as rock, even with overclock speeds. CPU temp gets to about 50~ 60C. It can run for days when I want it. It allows restarts no problem. But only when I shut the system down it won't turn on next time, fans spin for about 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001381109 sec and stop, system shuts down. I have to do the 3 minute power unplug or turn off the PSU switch again for it to turn on EVERYTIME whether it's oc'ed, DEFAULT clocked, or UNDERCLOCKED it doen't matter..

This is really annoying. At first I thought it's the CMOS battery, but it remembers my time and date just fine. What else is wrong? D:

My awesome 5 year old system spec:

- Core2Duo Conroe E6600 chip
- ASUS P5B Deluxe mommyboard
- ATi X1950XTX
- Sony Blu-ray drive
- 3 raptor HDDs + 2 regular HDDs
- 550watt Antec TruePower PSU

This is retarded...

That's very likely a PSU problem.

I had a similar problem with the Antec TrueBlue 480 in my old P4 setup. It worked fine if it was left running for weeks at a time, but it would get stuck in a POST loop if I started it up cold. I had to reset the CMOS in order to get it working again. Eventually that trick quit working.

I replaced the Antec with a Cooler Master Silent Pro M 700. No more cold boot problems.

Thanks for the convincing answer!!!

I am tempted, hehe!

I don't feel like spending my money yet... let me try unplugging components (HDDs, optical drive, etc) and see if it behaves any different.😵

I will let ya guys know with the updates!

i had this issue once, I promptly reseated all the components and reset the cmos. I was good to go after that.

Bad cpu fan? If fan rpm is too low or the signal is missing, some boards will shut down if the bios is set to do so.

Probably the PSU, although the way it keeps running perfectly stable once it is on almost makes it sound like the motherboard. Does it actually have to be off for three minutes, or is it more like 30 seconds?

Had msi p45 do the same stuff for a year changed ps no different.
Set the pc up for low voltage sleep time and pc stayed on for 9 months.
Changed out the mb and gave pc to my daughter with new 23 monitor.

Don't know. Good call. I will check my CPU fan and see if they are working correctly.

Yes at least 3 minutes. 30 sec won't cut it. I have to flip the PSU power switch off again and wait another 3 min and turn it back on.

So are you saying it's my motherboard? uhh.. I hope not. I like my motherboard a lot.

.

Sounds like exact same problem I had once with an Antec TruePower 480W (i.e. pretty much same PSU). Every once in awhile it would balk at starting up, but would be fine once I got up and going. Then one day it never started again. I could see inside it that some caps were busted open. Replaced with Corsair 450, fine ever since...

UPDATE......

Sorry for the very late response.

Great thanks to many of you. Like you guys suspected, it was the Power Supply. I replaced my Antec TP550 with a CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-650HX 650W PSU and it booted right off! Stock clock no problem. Overclock no problem. I don't have to do that crazy 3~5 minute power off thing again. THANK GOD. Got my ol' Conroe E6600(2.4ghz) w/ stock cooler back to 3.2ghz 1:1 5-5-5 without any issue. Ran prime95 on it and stable like a tank.

Bottom line? Corsair PSU rocks. This is some good stuff. 120 bucks well spent.

What I learned today? Stay away from Antec PSU's... They have jump-start problems just like on cars lol.

Thanks again guys,😀
