I've never played Darwinia but Uplink has been a favorite of mine over the years. It's a text-based hacker game in which the world really feels alive. You can follow logs of other hackers, set them up by putting their IP address in log files, Steal bank money, trace bank transfers, change somebody from living to deceased in the social security database to steal their identity, there is a jobs board, software and hardware upgrades and a lot more.
The list of hacking tools is immense, proxy disabler, proxy bypass, firewall disabler, firewall bypass, password cracker, dictionary cracker, decrypter, voice analyzers, decypherers... That's not all of them.
It's kind of an old game. With today's monitors I'd suggest going fullscreen and setting the resolution to something like 1024x768 or you'll have a hard time reading the tiny font. I wish they would make a #2.
Obviously this isn't very real, but it is very fun. I think there is a free demo on the uplink: hacker elite website.
