Well, it really depends what you are running now. if you have a decent socket A system already, then I would still wait till Barton is out, then just upgrade the CPU. Hammer will almost definately require a new board. Personally, I am not going to upgrade till I can get a dual Clawhammer board with serial ATA. 3GIO would be nice too, I think that even VIA wouldn't be able to screw up a clawhammer board with 3GIO(No northbridge, and IRQ's no longer get hogged).

Anyone know for sure the compatability of an nForce Via 266a chipset motherboard with Thoroughbred or Barton?

If I remember correctly one or both of them will use SOI and both should be on 0.13 micron? It *should* be compatible with the nForce right?

I heard the Thoroughbred is due out in about a month, but what's the ETA for the Barton. I'm close to building a brand new super computer from scratch.

Supposedly, nForce as well as all other 266MHz FSB supporting boards will be able to run Thoroughbred processors with a simple BIOS update.

The details of Barton have not been released yet, and therefore no one really knows.

Wait. You've got a nice rig right now, and really, if you want an upgrade, then get SCSI (If you're an Office user) or a GF3 Ti200 if you're a gamer. Wait for ClawHammer for your next CPU upgrade.

Barton will implement SOI (Silicon On Insulator) technology. Thoroughbred will not.

Barton might have other features as well, but no one really knows at this point.

What's gonna be out by summer? I'm going off to college, so I'll need to build a rig for my dorm.

2GHz and higher .13u Athlon XP Thoroughbred/Barton processors. ClawHammer in October/November/December timeframe if you can wait it out.
