Upgraqding AGP card for Quake 4

Current system:

Asus P4C800-E board
P4 3.0
2 x 1G PC3200 RAM
ATI Radeon 9800Pro 128MB
Dell 2005FPW

I plan eventually to upgrade this system but for now I want to just upgrade the video card in order to play Quake 4 with some goodies enabled! Right now the default settings are the lowest quality. Boosting the settings in the game causes some stuttering.

I'm looking for a quick & dirty fix without a whole system upgrade, so what AGP card would you folks recommend in order to play Quake 4 on higher settings? Budget is $150 or so...

thanks

yep, looking for AGP...

It'll be a temp fix card, I'll end up tossing it when I upgrade later this year, when the physX card situation gets clearer..

Go with the 6800nu as mentioned above. SM3, decent core & mem speeds, it'll last you till you upgrade later in the year. I got a 6800 and unlocked the extra 4 pipes and pixel shader and it increased my framerates marginally.

I see that NewEgg has the eVGA 7800GS CO on sale for $269 after rebate. I know this is way over what i psoted as a budget, but I'm thinking it owuld buy me up to another year in decent performance on the newer games. I have a 431W Enermax PS, hoping that will be enough. Is this card a single slot card?

So I'm slightly changing my request here, instead of "throwing away" $150 or so, I'll double my buidget with the idea of buying 9 to 12 months before I do a full upgrade..

thoughts?

Does that Apollo 6800 actually come with only 8 pipes enabled? Or is that a typo? For Q4 you're definitely gonna want an NV card. You really can't go wrong with anything from the 6600gt up, just depends on how much eye candy you want.

For crying out loud, I play Q4 on a Radeon 9600 Pro and it still looks great... what are you, upgrade whores or what? 😛

yeah. *heh*

I got my 20.1" LCD two weeks ago. I was at the end of Serious Sam 2, basically only had 3 levels left, but WOW did it look amazing on this thing. But SS2 let me have a bunch of eye candy on, whereas Quake 4 defaults to the lowest settings. And, turns out I like Q4 a lot more thani expected, I really enjoy the buddy system in the first few levels, I hope it continues that way. Anyway, I want some eye candy like I had in SS2 without the 15FPS rate. Since I'm not ready to plop 2 large on a full upgrade just yet, I want a temporary fix.

So I'm looking to replace the 9800Pro with a 7800GS, assuming it's a single-slot card...

why not try a x850xt. I see them very cheap here in the f/s forums. Mi ati card looks nice in Q4 at 1680x1050. 😉
