Upgrading...

7900GT.
Cheaper than a X1800, faster, etc.

For the same price of a 7900GT retail ($300), you can only get a X1800 OEM (that means shorter warrenty).

simple equation 6600GT sli = 6800 ultra +or -

7800 GTX= 6800 Ultra SLI +or-

7900 gt sligtly better than 7800 GTX

I would guess the 7900 GT is roughly 2.5-3 times the power of your current rig

Most 7900GT's have been able to acheive 7800 GTX 512MB speeds and performance.

thats pretty much crap. I have a 6600gt and everything looks great to me (i've seen ATI systems, and they dont look any different). Unless you want to use ATIs AA/AF features, they look identical. Even then, I've seen screenshots comaring nvidia and atis aa/af and other IQ stuff, and i saw no difference.

and this shimmering thing...i have never seen this.

so dont start saying ati has better IQ when both companies have nearly identical IQ. even if ATI did have "better" iq, it wouldnt be worth the money because Nvidia still looks great.

and I never said Nvidia had better IQ, so dont pull that on me either.

I would go for the 7900gt, because of price/performance.

Depends. When I upgraded to a 7800GT from an X800XL, I noticed obvious shimmering with the 7800GT where I didn't see any with the X800XL (especially in games like HL2) . . . but I suppose some for whatever reason don't notice . . .

Image quality will be very very close, I notice no shimmering with my 7800GT. That said, performance advantage of the 7900GT is also close to the X1800XT. I would pick the 7900GT, but either option should do well.

I'd go for thte 1800, they perform about the same. After owning a single 6600gt, the shimmering was terrible in bf2 and wow. the 7900 or 1800 would be a huge jump over dual 6600gt's.

Feature wise, the X1800XT is where you should look. If you want a cooler running & less power hungry card go for the 7900GT. Noise wise they are pretty similar (stock for stock). As for performance, there really isn't much between them.

7900GT:
Cooler
Lower Power Requirements

X1800XT:
Better features (HDR+AA, AVIVO)
HQ AF (apaprently, I personally don't see it while playing but some do)

If none of those points sway you, get whichever can be had for cheaper, they won't let you down.

I have seen 512 XT's on newegg for 350 which is close to GTX performance stock and you can manipulate voltages etc. and clock the bejeebers out of them plus avivo...sounds like the best deal out although the 7900 got me looking

Stock X1800XT will beat 7900GT. You'd need an overclocked 7900GT to match X1800XT's speed. If you can't find around $330-340 7900GT at 550/1600+, I'd go with X1800XT. Either will be 2x faster than 6600GT SLI.
