Upgrading XP x64 Pro SP2 to Vista x64 Ultimate SP1

Well, its more of an experiment really for when I do finally decide to upgrade.

I've got a nice backup image of XP x64 to roll back to if things get messy.

So, now SP1 is around for Vista, I thought I'd try out an upgrade of my current XP x64 SP2 to Vista SP1, just for sh1ts and giggles. 😉

I'm using a full version of Vista, but an upgrade is the only way I'm going, as I really really don't want to spend ages re-installing everything.
So if it all goes wrong, then I'm probably not going to be using Vista any time soon.

Once the Vista upgrade is installed, I'll be going straight to SP1 and then see how things go.

OK. I've uninstalled my Anti Virus, graphics drivers, sound card drivers and TV card drivers.

The system is clean from spyware and viruses.

Lets see just how good a job MS have done.

On we go.

LOL. First problem hit.

I have a 20GB OS partition with just under 10GB of free space.

The upgrade says it requires 14187 of free space. WTF!

OK, where did I put those partition magic disks? 🙂

Oh sheesh. You're going to upgrade to a new version of Windows when clearly everyone says not to and history has said not to. Then you're going to base your experience of Vista on this subpar install of Vista.

You should just stay on XP. This will almost certainly not work out well 😉

This is pretty much true. If your going to go to Vista then a clean install is the only way.

Well its not like going from Win98 to XP.
I've done a few successful upgrades of Win2K to XP back in the day, so I reckon I can pull this off. 😀

Once Vista RTM is on, I'll be going straight to SP1.

Have some faith in Microsoft. 😉

I'm afraid I'm a pragmatist and until there's sufficient evidence otherwise, upgrading tends to cause a lot more "phantom problems" which are difficult to track down.

There is no supported upgrade path from XP x64 to Vista x64: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/932795

Windows XP Professional x64 users can purchase an upgrade license for the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. However, they must perform a clean installation of the operating system.

Well thats bloody crap!

Why on earth can't you upgrade from one 64bit OS to another?

The part wher I said 'have faith in Microsoft' earlier.......forget it. :brokenheart:
