my current system:

1.0 Ghz Thunderbird Processor
512 mb pc 2100 crucial 64x64 Ram
Asus A7V8X-X KT400 Mobo

Ok, so i just bought a new mobile barton 2400+ off newegg due to overclocking hype. I also bought a Zalman 7000 fan because I was in need of an upgrade anyway. Here's my question: If I was to overclock my Barton processor to around 2.3~2.4Ghz, could i keep my mobo and ram? If I need to upgrade, what mobo and Ram would I need? I've asked questions about best compatible mobos for the Barton mobile and the responses seem to lean towards the Asus A7N8X-Deluxe or the Abit NF7-S. Also, I'm really unsure about the Ram that would be compatible w/ my setup. Would I need really expensive corsair PC4000 ram or is kingston pc2700 ram ok? any help would be greatly appreciated!

you will need some PC3200 ram if you want to run your processor at 200mhz (400mhz DC), you might not want to go for PC4000 because they charge high premium. Go for good PC3200 ram.

Definitely upgrade the mobo, like the abit NF7-s

I'd stick with the KT400 mb. You can change your multipliers and voltage from within Windows with two programs. No need to mod the chip at ALL!

what window based programs would I use? I wouldn't have to upgrade the mobo and still overclock up to 2.4-2.5 GHz? pc3200 RAM sounds good, but would I be able to use PC2700? the reason I'm asking is b/c there's a sale on PC2700 RAM. I believe its Kingston Ram. thanks for the help!

i bought the Asus mobo along with the mobile 2500+, hate it. it doesn't work with SB cards, its a known issue.it also only supports 1.825 volts for the CPU. the best i can get with this mobo is 2.4ghz stable. its being returned,i have a DFI in the mail.

Yes but unfortunately the KT400 doesn't support 400FSB or higher. That ruins the OC potential of the Mobiles.

ok, so i'm definitely upgrading my mobo. i'm thinkin either an abit nf7-s, an a7n8x-deluxe or maybe even the DFI. My question is, what type of Ram will I need? will PC3200 give me enough headroom for both overclocking and not overclocking the 2400+ mobile? any recommendations to brand names or types of pc3200 ram? are there any conflicts b/w the ram and the 3 different types of mobos? sorry for all the questions, but i wanna make sure i know what i'm doing before i go out and buy a new mobo and ram online. online returns are a pain = ) thx

go with the DFI if you want a good board that is solid and i have seen high fsb with it

for memory try to get something good , mushkin level II if its still being made. there was some ocz pc3500 el limited edition stuff that was suppose to be good and then there is corsair . my luck with kingston hyper x left me not wanting it
