Upgrading with a $700-800 budget

I'm looking to upgrade my computer within the next week or two. I've gotten a decent idea of what I'm looking for but wanted some suggestions since I haven't been following hardware closely recently.

Primary uses for upgrade: I want to play the newest games at high settings at my monitors max resolution (1680x1050).

What I'm keeping from my old system: I'll be keeping my 650 watt corsair psu as from what I'm reading I don't seem to need more than that unless I'm going to have a crazy amount of hard drives or doing multiple video card setups. I'll also be keeping my Hard Drive and DVD-Burner.

What I need: Case, Mobo, CPU, RAM, and Video Card

Like the title says, my budget is 700-800 dollars but if I can do what I need to do for less, that's fine too.

CPU/Mobo - Intel seems to be the way to go at this point. I'm thinking I will go with an i5 processor as it seems i7 might be out of my budget and the money I save might be better put to use on the video card. Ideal amount I'd like to spend on CPU/Mobo together would be 300-350 dollars

RAM - I'm thinking 4-6 Gigs would suit me, any more seems to be overkill at this point. How much of a difference am I going to see going from DDR2 to DDR3 at this point? Also, I don't over clock so that doesn't play a factor into what kind of RAM I'm going to buy. Budget for RAM would probably be 80-120 dollars

Video Card - I've been an Nvidia person for a while now but I'm ok with going ATI if they offer a better price/performance ratio. I'd like something with HDMI on it so I can hook it up to my HDTV too if possible. Budget for Video Card would be 200-300 dollars

Case - I think I'm going to try to get a Full tower as most mid towers i've used seem really cramped. Is there a good full tower I can get for around $100? Something quiet would be ideal if possible. I don't need a power supply since I will be using the one I have as noted earlier.

For reference I'm upgrading from a Athlon X2 3600 with 2 Gigs of RAM and a 8600 GT which can run TF2 and Left 4 Dead fine but is terrible with stuff like GTA 4 Call of Duty MW 2 and most of the newer high end stuff. As you can see I have a decent idea of what I want but would like some guidance. Thanks for taking the time to read this and any recommendations you can give me.

Full tower seems unnecessary. I don't really see a need for that, so go with the CM 690 II or a cheaper Antec 300, take the money saved and upgrade to a 5850. That should let you run games at max settings @ 1680 1050 easy. HSF? Going to OC? In either case, AMD would give you the better value for quadcore gaming.

On second thought, I did that exact same build I mentioned a few weeks ago. Deneb 955 + XFX 5850 + G.skill DDR3-1333 + CM 690 II. Great value, imo. Even the Deneb shouldn't bottleneck current and most upcoming games (I would guess). If you really plan on maxing graphics, 5850 is the way to go. Could even consider dropping memory to 1333, if you need a bit of extra cash.

EDIT: Also, be aware the motherboard you chose doesn't support CFX/SLI. Might come in handy later if you want to just pick up a 5770/5830 (when available) now, and CFX it later for better graphics

If you are not going to be loading up on hard drives, etc, on your system, that full tower is going to be really really roomy. You might consider dropping down one size level on your Bravo, if that's the style of case you like. I have an older Chieftec Dragon midtower, same general size as the Bravo midtower, and it is quite well designed, and really easy to work in.

That Nvidia 260 seems a little overpriced for what you get right now. Even with the factory overclocking. Unfortunately, there's a price-to-performance hole in card availability between about $150 and $275. Not the best spot for video card hunting right now. If I were doing it, I would bite on one of the Ati 5850s, which appear to be available under $300 now. There's an HIS one on Newegg now, $289 out the door. It's a bit of overkill for your monitor, but you should be able to max out every reasonably programmed game out there.

If you are not overclocking, you may indeed want to drop down in your memory speed choice, to save some money as well.

I agree with what others have said. Excellent picks on the CPU, mobo, and RAM. However, the GTX260 is way overpriced - for ~ another $70 you can get a 5850 which is almost twice as fast: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161302 . The full tower case is also way too big for what you're designing, unless that's what you want. I've built several rigs with the Antec 300 and love the case - what a great, functional design: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129066 .

Antec 300 and the CM 690 are the cases I build with most commonly. Both are excellent.

Get either a 5850 or a 5770, that card is a rip off. ATI has the current lead in video, so if you're team green to the bone, you'll have to wait.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I might go with that cm690 case. I couldn't find it on newegg but amazon has it for 100 dollars and free shipping so ill just get it from them.

With the motherboard I doubt ill be using dual video cards at any point as a figure ill just upgrade everything again by then. If anyone has suggestions on a better motherboard than what I picked ill look into them.

I'm ok with getting an ati card, the only thing I hear are there is some issues with their drivers from time to time. Ill probably be running win7 on this system, is there anything I should avoid from ati driver wise?

EDIT: Also, be aware the motherboard you chose doesn't support CFX/SLI. Might come in handy later if you want to just pick up a 5770/5830 (when available) now, and CFX it later for better graphics

Actually, I just went back and reread the product description and it says it does or am I reading it wrong?
