Upgrading Voodoo 3 3000 for Asus ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB

I have an old baby AT based PC that I'm upgrading for someome who does not want to throw out his old system. Its a socket 7 based system (TMC AI5VG+ board) with a K6-2 (450 MHz) cpu and a Voodoo 3 3000 (AGP2x) video card. The whole system is around 6 years old and he wants to upgrade with a better video card to get a bit more use out of the system before total upgrade in about a years time.

I suggested a Asus ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB AGP8X graphics card which costs less that $50 and I believe was introduced around 2 to 3 years ago, but still much newer than his current Voodoo card. According to the ATI website the card will work with an AGP 2x slot.

Is the Radeon 9200SE likely to give him a relative significant performance (3D) boost over the much older Voodoo 3 3000 card?

mrpolly.

it's an upgrade, but what are you planning to play? a 9200 SE is worse than the 9200, which is already a LOW end card.

His kids want to be able to use emulators (e.g. possibly project 64, ultrahle) that are as old as his current hardware, but running slow with his current setup. Not really interested in playing any of the latest games requiring modern hardware.

The 9200SE is slower than 9200 as you say, but as long as it is a performance boost over the much older Voodoo card (frames per second) he doesn?t really mind.

Emulators? Do those emulators even make use of the GPU much? If not, you may be better off with a new CPU.

Emulators is all CPU not GPU. It's time to upgrade the whole thing now if he's still using a K6-2 processor.

Don't get the 9200. Go to the FS/FT Forum and buy a cpu/mobo combo in your price range. Possibly something along the lines of a 1700+~2100+

Note my rig. Some of the N64 emulated games lag on my comp. You could probably play NES and SNES fine, but N64 will be pushing it on that system
