Upgrading videocard but have PSU question

Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade my Sapphire Radeon 4870 512MB Videocard to a new XFX Radeon 5850 1GB Videocard but I'm wondering if my PSU can handle it.

I have an XCLIO 500W "Goodpower" PSU powering my rig with the 4870 in it right now, will this PSU be able to handle the new 5850? I see the 5850 lists a 500W PSU as a minimum requirement but I just want to make sure.

These are the specs for my current XCLIO 500W PSU:
+12V1@16A; +12V2@17A

I'd be on the search for a better power supply. That XClio is a Sirfa produced unit, and Sirfa isn't exactly known as one of the higher quality manufacturers of power supplies.

That's XClio's lowest end power supply, has horrible efficiency (listed at >70%....which is the bare minimum ATX spec from quite a few years ago), and XClio doesn't even mention what the max. combined output for the +12V rails is....information that's at least very relevant, if not vitally important, in today's computers.

I've got a D0 i7 920 @ 4GHz @ 1.28V, watercooled, with a 5850 and it idles pulling 255W from the wall. At full load, it's pulling well over 550W from the wall.

I'd be careful about your power supply.....a 500W power supply isn't always a "500W" power supply.
 
If you check Jovec's link the 4870 actually uses more power than the 5850. So if your PSU was fine with the 4870, the 5850 should be ok.

Unless they changed OEMs...they were made by CWT
