I'm looking for opinions on which video card to buy... (I hope I've come to the right place... ;-)
My two-year-old, once state-of-the-art system is showing its age. I used to get killer frame rates in all my games, but the latest games are starting to drag it down, and I can't stand low frame rates! So I've decided to upgrade...
Here's what I have currently:
ASUS P2B-S
128 MB PC-100 CAS-2 RAM
Celeron 300-A running at 450 MHz
Matrox Millennium G200
Twin 12 MB Diamond Voodoo2s in SLI
I've already ordered an 800 MHz Pentium III (FCPGA) and an slocket adapter, since I saw the 450 Celery as my main bottleneck.
The three(!) video cards are the next to go. I am SO ready to ditch those antiquated things I can hardly stand it. (Although I've read in these forums that some folks keep the V2s just for Glide games.)
I'm trying to figure out how much of a gain I'll see if I upgrade to a GeForce2 GTS vs. a GeForce2 MX. While I would love to have the state-of-the-art again (GTS - I know the Ultra is on the way, but I haven't seen it for sale yet), the price is a little high, which makes the MX look very attractive. (I won the 2 Diamond Voodoo2s at E3 '98 when they were $300 USD each. Now 3dfx sells them for $30 USD retail. So I really don't want to blow something like $300 for a card that's going to be worth nothing in a couple years. Spending $100 for a card that will be worth nothing in a couple years isn't so bad.)
If the MX is going to provide me with a huge performance increase over my Voodoo2s, then I will be very happy with that. I don't have to have *the* best, I just want smooth frame rates at a decent resolution (1024x768x16 or better). On the other hand, if the MX won't be much of a jump in frame rates, then I might make the "investment" and go for the GTS, which I know will blow me away.
So, what do you think? Will the MX perform much better than the V2s? Should I go for the GTS? I'm also open to other chips (ATI, 3dfx, etc) but I'm looking for maximum bang for the buck, and from what I read on anandtech, nVidia seems to be the best bet.
(I'm also intrigued with FSAA. Seems like the MX would be a borderline FSAA solution. So it takes big bucks right now for FSAA - true?)
(BTW, I don't care at all about DVD, Twin or Dual-Anything, TV-in or out, etc. Just fast and beautiful 3D, and 2D of course.)
Any thoughts, opinions or slaps-up-side-the-head would be greatly appreciated! ;-)
