Upgrading Video Card, best price/performance/good overclock on the market?

dxkj

Lifer
I was looking into getting a PNY GeForce 4 TI 4200 64MB for $70 shipped.

Good idea? Bad idea? Should I drop 150 on a DX 9 card? Will the geforce be able to play newer dx 9 games?

I need a new mobo and ram, so if I can get a geforce 4200 for $70, I can get a new board and another stick of ram for the same price as a new 9600 pro

Thanks

if it was me (and, actually it is because i need a new card too)

id wait a couple months

ati and nvidia have new cards coming out that should drive down the prices of their current offerings. hoping to get a radeon 9600pro or 9700 something...depending on how things look when the 9600XT comes out

im waiting til the end of november so i can have it in time for christmas. ill rely on my gf3 until then

if you absolutely want something now the 9600pro looks good, 150-ish at newegg

Seriously though... couple new offerings from ATI and nVidia will reduce prices on current stuff. But price/performance is relative now that we have DX8 games, but DX9 hardware 😕

It also depends on your price range... for less than $100, a 64 MB Ti4200 is definately your best bet... but the overall best price/performance card would probably be the 9800 non-pro if you can find one, or the 9700 Pro if you can find it for about 200-225... or... I'm very satisfied with my FX5900, even though it's not as good as ATI's cards in DX9 software... but then again... I don't own any DX9 software... and neither do you =) And neither of us will for another month or two minimum... I plan to upgrade again probably early next year, or at least, whenever the NV40 and R400 cores are out.

But yea... 64 MB Ti4200 if you're trying to keep it under $100... 9800 non-pro or 9700 pro if you can spend a tad over 200

Yes, HL2 and I believe Doom3... you can run them in DX8 mode... you won't get the stunning graphics you seen in screen shots that are floating around... it'll probably look similar to some of the best DX8 games you can get today.

I think i remember seeing a 9600 pro at allstarshop or some such for like 150. Now that is a good deal on a card that overclock really well and it showed good preformance in the halflife benchmarks.

nm here newegg has it for 155 newegg
