1st, my system specs:

Abit NF7S v2.0
AMD XP 2600+
3 GB DDR RAM
SATA 320GB Hard Drive w/Windows XP SP3
SATA 320GB Hard Drive w/Vista Business SP1
Antec Earthwatt 400W PSU
ATI X800 XT AGP

I'm trying to upgrade to an HD 3850 AGP card.
I uninstall the 8.10 ATI drivers for the X800, install the 3850
and boot up. I've tried the catalyst drivers v8.10, the v8.10 Hotfix,
and the v8.11 Betas.

I can boot into safemode as expected, but normal mode yields a blank screen
after the XP splash screen.
Next, I try to boot into Vista Business and get perpetual restarts after the Vista
splash screen.

I've connected the 3850 to the 6 pin pci-e plug from the power supply AND
to the molex-->pci-e adapter cables that came with the card. Do I need an
8 pin pci-e plug/adapter? Here's one from newegg
Any help is appreciated.

I think you have to use the drivers on the cd that came with the card.

What brand card is it?

That's one hell of a GPU upgrade, my old Xp2000+@2600+ always horribly bottlenecked my 6800GS@U so I can only begin to imagine how bottlenecked you'll be if and when you get it working...

Earthwatt 430w? I tihnk you mean either 380w or 430w. Either of those should be just fine powering your system ... The 3850 does not need a 8pin pci-e connector, so ordering one is useless...

Which hotfix? The one for STALKER and FarCry or the one here for AGP cards?

I installed three Sapphire 3850's this past week and used the included molex adapters in all three systems. One systems was Socket 939, the other two systems were Socket A. Each system has a different power supply: Antec 500W Basiq, Antec 500W Earthwatts, and a Coolmax CT-450 (450W).

If you got the right hotfix drivers then I'd suggest a new power supply.
