Okay, the fun begins tomorrow. I picked up my new case today. (Enlight 7237 ... finally moving to an ATX form factor!)

The computer show is in town this weekend so that's where the rest of my hard earned dinero is going. I've decided to get an Abit KT7 mobo and, for now at least, a Duron CPU.

From what I've read I get the impression that the specific chip speed, i.e., 600, 650 or 700 is moot because they all "top out" at roughly the same speed when overclocked. Does anyone have any experience with this or insights?

Also, any recommendations on a top notch heatsink/fan?

I've overclocked about 8 durons so far. And most of them made 800mhz without a hitch.

It's true, it seems like it doesn't matter what processor you buy if your overclocking. I suggest a 600mhz variety.

I've got 1 that does 980mhz with a stock heatsink but I had to have the case off with another fan blowing around the cpu. I'm waiting for globalwin fop32 to come so I can finally close my case.

I suggest you get the newer globalwin fop32 for socket A. It performs similar to the more expensive alpha 6035.

This is so far out of 8 600mhz durons

2 800mhz
3 850mhz
2 950mhz
1 980mhz I'm really hoping to reach 1000mhz out of this one.

It's really a heat issue. These darn durons get so much hotter than celerons when overclocked. My current cpu temp is 51-56 celcius when overclocked with a retail heatsink with a fan blowing around my cpu area with case open.

Tested with abit kt7.

what's the hottest temperature that you can safely push the duron's to?

i'm thinking anything above 55 degrees would be a bit risky....

I personally prefer to use 700 mhz durons since I have been able to get 1050 out of them at 1.85 volts. With an Alpha PAL6035 the temps are less than 48C under full load. The most I ever got out of a 600 was 950. A lot of 700's reach 950 and a few hit 1000 or more.
