..when Installing xp pro on a drive with an existing load of w 98 is it best to fdisk the w98 drive and start fresh?? What happens if xp detects the existing master boot record on the w98 drive..I've always installed xp on fresh drives. Not shure what to do here..

if not dual booting then boot from the xp cd, delete your partition(s), recreate it/them, format & install xp.

..thanks for the response..not dual booting. Well I tried it and somtimes xp freezes on setup or setup loads completly and then says "can't find hard drive" but yet w 98 loads with no problem on the same HD. So I tried a fresh HD and get the same results. For some reason xp setup can't find the HD yet w98 loads fine. It's a xp2400 M7VIF mob 1 gig ram radeon 7500 vid card..Turtle Beach sound card..

In worst case, run hdrive manufacturer utilities to test hdrive and then write zeros. Then try to install xp. I've had hdrives do what yours is doing and since win98 was so much smaller it worked where xp didn't. Most ended up being bad new drives.
