Upgrading to Win XP from ME?

Any experience in upgrading from Win ME to XP? I'd like to do an upgrade an avoid a fresh install for obvious reasons, and I've been given conflicting advice for ME... any tips?
THANKS!😕

I just did this on a buddies Dell with a few minor problems. I think it went rather well considering all the crap on his system.

I also upgraded to XP Pro over ME with perfect success first try. XP Pro found all my hardware, printer, monitor and everything installed in the computer and installed new drivers for many of them. All done automatically. All my old Windows programs continued working perfectly as they did before the upgrade to XP Pro.

It did help a lot that my old ME installation was about as perfect a running system I had ever had. It ran better than 98 ES.

Of course XP Pro is the best of them all and I do not have to worry about running out of resources.

If you upgrade from an older version of Windows to XP the success really depends on if your old version of Windows was runniing as perfectly as possible.

I have so far upgraded 5 computers from ME to XP Pro - all following the upgrade path, and all resulting in very stable and reliable systems. Clean install is largely a myth if you take the time to "prep" your old system completely before the upgrade.

My first choice is always to upgrade - clean install is the court of last resort, often dictated by a poorly maintained OS in the first place. If the upgrade doesn't work - then of course, do a clean install. The problem is that many users do not maintain their systems in tip top working order to start with.
