Upgrading to W7 from Vista.

I have a fairly new machine that I would like to upgrade to W7. Not that I don't like vista because I do ( it is just easier for the wife to have all machines the same os). It is a Dell Studio and I would like to upgrade to W7 Pro because of the XP option because I have an important program that needs XP. I have never had upgraded a Dell to my own OS. Will their equipment and drivers still work? I have heard that sometimes it doesn't or is that just bull?

I did exactly that last summer. I first did a clean install of Windows 7 - but that didn't suit me well - too much work to install and recustomize over 40 programs, etc.

So, I did the direct upgrade and it was perfect. All apps work - sound works, and all peripherals work.

I upgraded my Dell Vostro laptop from Vista x86 Home Premium to Win7 x86 Ultimate which was a very easy upgrade, only had one program from Win7 upgrade advisor that stated I should uninstall before the upgrade,it kept all my other stuff etc and is still working great even today 🙂.

I upgraded Dell laptop to Win 7as far back as Inspiron of the 8000 class.

With old Laptops the main issue is Video cards, it loads the Standard VGA Graphic and you loose 3D acceleration.

It still works but only good for text related and 2D type of applications.

If the Video card is nVidia there is modded drivers that can over come the 3D problem and provide some form of 3D.

Aero with old Graphic Chipset? No, will not work even if One has huge amount of memory.

Old Dell Towers are in a similar situation, but there it is possible to put a PCU garphic and get #D Aero and evry thing.

In most cases Win 7 has Drivers embeded for this upgrade.

Audio and Network card might need an update through Microsoft Update service or 3rd party Drivers for Win 7.

Hardware wise, one thing make a big different with an old computer, Memory. If you have an old computer with less than 1GB of memory you must upgrade.

If I have Dell machine does it work best to get the upgrade disc from them or just buy one off of newegg. They are giving me a little better deal than newegg on an upgrade to. Oh, and now with the new fix in Windows 7 you don't need hardware virtualization for it to work. I could get W7 Pro and get the XP mode built in.

I would imagine it should work--make sure to download the W7 drivers if they are any different beforehand.

Are you sure that the XP-needing program won't need hardware access that virtualization doesn't provide, and/or that it won't run under W7. So far it seems W7 handles pretty much everything I've thrown at it.

I was happy with Vista too--but I have to say W7 is definitely better and a nice improvement.
