upgrading to vista

My mother bought me halo 2 for vista, and I currently have windows xp. I tried to look around for patches but they don't allow you to play online, so I am going to upgrade.

My concern is that I don't want to lose certain programs on my current system, so if I upgrade can I still use some of the old programs or will they be automatically deleted / unable to use?

Thanks !

There are a million good reasons to upgrade to Vista, but in all honestly, Halo 2 isnt one of them. Upgrading XP to Vista is going to be a lot messier than clean installing Vista, and if thats all you have to gain, you're asking for trouble. No one can tell you how well itll work unless you tell us what kind of hardware/software you're running.

I personally wouldnt tell someone to install Vista, and especially to upgrade from XP unless they knew what they were doing and could fix issues themselves. From the sound of your post, youre just not that type, and youre better off staying away from Vista until you can buy a PC that has it preloaded on.

Truthfully, if you really want to play halo 2, you should get an xbox and a copy of the game for it, which will be much cheaper than Vista anyway.

There are unofficial patches to get Halo 2 to work under XP, but you'd have to ask in the PC Gaming forum, or use Google. BD2003 is dead right though.

But I read that you cannot play online xbox live with those XP patches...which defeats the purpose ! Online is a big part!

That wouldnt surprise me either. What are your system specs? It sounds from your post that you've never actually installed an OS upgrade before.

The thing with Vista is that there is a very thin line between excellent performance and crappy performance. It all comes down to how much ram you have.

Is it really worth it to spend over $100 on an OS upgrade that may in the end ruin your PC, in order to play a 3 year old game that is such a crappy port that it requires a monster system in order to be playable anyway?

Seriously...Halo 2 is the single worst reason to upgrade to Vista. But if youre still considering it, at least list your specs.
