Upgrading to P4 DDR or RDRAM?

I know, I know. I said as soon as the i845 came out supporting DDR I would upgrade. Well it's out and I'm questioning the difference between the two. Anandtech, or other sites that I'm aware of, don't have benchmarks comparing 845-D to 850. Anyone know of some comparisons of the two?

The heavy overclocking people are all using i845D because they can increase their FSB to 133, and the ram will still be in spec. RDRAM can't take that much abuse (unless you have PC1066 RDRAM).

From what I see, putting the P4 on DDR with the 845D makes it lose some performance: around 200mhz or so. Another thing to consider is that DDR is expensive now, whereas RDRAM is still about the same cost. It's all up to you. If AMD didn't exist, I'd probably get a Sis 645 setup or an i850 setup, but AMD is around, so I'm working on a KT266A setup.

The I850 is probably better. With the cost of DDR and Rambus about the same--I would go Rambus. I am going with the DDR, as I bought a ton of it when it was so cheap. The P4 is a better product for most people than the XP, but even with DDR memory the cost of the processor is about twice as much. Ouch!! The cost of the XP is just too cheap--the P4 isn't too expensive. RRRRRR

There is a way to get past the issue with the RDRAM. Lower the RDRAM Ratio to 3X and then as long as you're running at 133fsb, the RDRAM will be right at 400MHz. Go RDRAM. You won't be sorry. 4 Layer 850 boards should be avoided for Overclocking. They are behind 845-D boards. The most common 4 layer 850 board is Asus P4T-e. The best 850 board is Abit TH7II
