Windows 2k gives the option to upgrade your drives to dynamic and then you can use them in a software raid mode. Will I see a performance boost with 2- 15g maxtors, similar to a promise card or is it not worth it? I only use 2k no other operating system!

Thanks

This is a hard question to answer.

The answer is, probably not. If you're striping without parity, you could see an increase in performance, especially if the disks are on different controllers, or different channels of the same controller.

If you want RAID 5, remember that parity information must be calculated for all the data going to the disk. In hardware RAID, the controller card does this. In software RAID, the CPU must do this.

I have no concrete evidence one way or the other, but I suspect you won't find the benefits you're looking for.

so in essence this is very similar to how the inexpensive raid cards work? so just a simple strip with no parity I should see a boost?
