Upgrading to Athlon XP 2100+ (max supported by mobo)

I have an Abit KR7A-133RAID motherboard with an Athlon XP 1700+ CPU.
I am about to upgrade the processor a bit, since they're so cheap.

The documentation says the motherboard supports Athlon XP Palomino up to 2100+ and XP Thoroughbred up to 2000+.
Should I believe that, or get something a bit faster, like a 2800+?

I think you could go up to a 2400+ I had a board that said 1900+ and I ran a 2200+ on it. The board has to be able to supply the needed voltage.

go check to see if there is a BIOS update that allows better processors

if you want to upgrade the rig, keep the CPU and get a nForce2 mobo. then overclock the crap out of that 1700+. those are gutsy little chips--mine is doing 2.2GHz (2600+) speed without a sweat. dump that POS via mobo and join the year 2003.

Thanks! Sounds like a plan, although if I get something like an Abit NF7-S mobo, I will also need an IDE RAID controller card, since I am using the RAID capabilities of my current motherboard.

My ABIT NF7-S Rev 2.0 has been reliable and useful whilst being reasonably priced. Perhaps you could buy some PATA -> SATA adapters and use the SATA headers instead of buying an IDE card. Just a theory, dont know wholly if that is possible.

No, I can't do that because I use RAID 1/0 and (correct me if I'm wrong) SATA is only capable of RAID 0.

yo. i had the exact same rig as you as of last week.
try to trade in the mobo/cpu/ram

get an nforce2/barton2500/pc3200
total upgrade = $100-150

if you've got a palomino, those things won't overclock much.
it's the green one.
and definitely not worth the time connecting bridges.
i OCed my barton2500 to 3200 right out of the box.
no bridges to connect, just upped the fsb to 200.
i suggest you do the same. have proper cooling.

getting a 1700+ thoroughbred to 2600+ is a lot less likely than getting a 2500+ to 3200+.

wait til march to upgrade the video card.

Let me cut to the chase..........

The KR7A-133 will support the XP 2400+, as is, so long as you use the "CX" bios. Some claim that it will run the Bartons as well. I have seen reports, but never tried it myself. I have installed a 2400+ successfully on a KR7A-133. The KR7A-133 can support up to 1.85 V to the CPU, and up to 2.94 V to the RAM.

Most any KR7A-133 will hit 180 Mhz FSB without effort. Many, mine included go to 200 Mhz without mods, air cooled. I have seen one, at 213 Mhz FSB.

The AIUHB 0302, XP 2100+ will most of the time hit 2.4 Ghz on air cooling, making it at least as good as the 1700+, maybe better (I have one that is stable at 2.44 Ghz). The 2400 is likley to not go as high as either the 2100+ or the 1700+, but I haven't seen too many reports. Bang for the buck award goes to the 1700+ though.
