Upgrading to AM3

With Win 7 coming out next month and no new amd chipsets, I've settled on this mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128392

From what I've read, it has about the same performance as all the other 7xx series chips and what's missing is something I'll not be using(raid 5). I'll be using my 720BE cpu to OC to about 3.4Ghz. I'll only be using 1 vid card, HD3870, so I won't need crossfire. Am I making a good choice here or is there something better for a comparable price? Nearest mobo I could find was about $30 more so I think its a good buy. Any advice?

The 790FX seems to be the preferred one for multi gpu users like gamers. When you remove that, I'm a single vid card non gamer, the rest of the chipsets appear to perform about the same. I've been considering getting a 785G mobo since that was the last chipset released but there doesn't appear to be any difference in performance unless there is a review I missed. I also considered this mobo but can't justify the $50 price difference:

I suggested this board to my buddy and he has been very happy with it.

ASRock A780GXE

Not sure what you are looking for all together. From what I get just a good board for an everyday computer. So there is my pick 🙂

Good luck with the hunt.

I'm currently using a 780G mobo with ddr2 ram so I would like to get something with a little more "oomph" when I switch over to ddr3. I had thought that the 785G chipset might be a good candidate but outside of the better IGP, its performance is about the same as all the 0ther 7xx series chips. This would make price a critical factor once you figure for single vid card usage.

If you do snag the Gigabyte 770 AM3 could you post a few dimension numbers for us?

1) Measurement 'edge to edge' of the rows of MOSFETs ? (like '79mm X 14mm'); and

2) Centerline of MOSFET mounting holes ?

I'm hoping that the 'long' side of the HR-09 S TYPE2 (84mm) will werk just dandy. The 'short side' (70mm) works like a charm on most of the Biostar 790gx mobos.

Thank yee.

If the centerline of the holes is 88mm as shown on that Enzo, using the SWAG 'eyeball' on the HR-09 I feel really good about my chances.

Now. I need to scrap up $80 for the mobo and sell an organ for the RAMs. 😛

Thanks.
