Upgrading to a WD 800JB HD, is it really worth it?

I'm thinking about getting the WD 80 gig SE hard drive. I have a 20 gig 7200rpm maxtor hard drive right now. If i upgrade to the 80 gig, will i really notice a performance difference? I need a little more space, but i'm really just looking to see if the speed upgrade would be worth it. ?

If you're looking at 80 gigs being what your space needs are, it's the fastest IDE drive you can get. It will be faster then your old drive, but from some of the benchmarks I've seen, it's a 5-30% performance boost depending on the application. Since they are priced just a touch above other 80 gig drives, there's almost no reason not to get it. =)

I'm sure most will agree, if you're out to buy an IDE 80 gig drive, this is the one to get.

They are the fastest non-SCSI drives available bar none,

I moved from a WD 120GB 7200 to the WD 120GB Special edition and love the move.

Besides you will have LOTS of extra space if you buy it and keep the 20

i'm not really out to buy a 80 gig drive. I'm out to buy a good performance drive in reason. (meaning no scsi unless it's ide cheap) If I buy this drive, will i notice a difference in performance from my old drive.

*edit* I know this is the basically the best ide drive out, but if there is not a NOTICABLE speed increase, there is no reason for me to buy a drive at all. Com'n guys, i'm just itching for a reason to buy this. I need you all to convince me to spend the money ;)

Spend the money. You want to. There will be an increase, the "placebo effect" (so to speak), should guarantee it's noticeable. If not, just pretend;)! Problem Solved.

Seriously, it should be worth it. I noticed it, but it was compared to a much older 7200rpm unit.

I just bought one, it's quite and made my system snappier for lack of a better term. Plan to get another 120 gigger SE too.

I agree with everyone else, these drives do rock. You probably won't wet yourself, but it does seem to have a little more "kick". =)

I think loading in games became shorter when I installed one but it might have just been me wanting to believe :)

I got the 1200JB, and it was the best $150(Thanks Hot Deals!) I've spent all year. I replaced an older WD 5400RPM drive with it, and it is MUCH faster. I work with large photoshop files occasionally, and the new drive has really sped things up when it resorts to virtual mem. The price is not much more than any other 80GB drive, but the performance is worth every extra penny, and then some.

Went from a 30gb 7200 RPM Maxtor to a WD 800JB. Not that big of a difference to me, games might load mebbe a few secs sooner. But what the heck... it's got 8MB cache!!!
