upgrading to a prescott...

So I haven't done a system upgrade in about 4 years now, and it's just damn time. I just read about 6 hours worth of reviews and product pages (I read fast, too) and now I think I've come to this configuration:

Asus P5AD2 Deluxe
I chose this over the Premium because I don't feel the extra cost justifies the slight hike in FSB nor the integrated gigabit ethernet.

Intel Pentium 4 3.4ghz (Prescott; 550; LGA775)
Again I feel that right now this is the best performance/cost deal from the Intel line up. Typically I buy AMD but I'm "expanding my mind" this time around. 😉

Cooler Master Hyper 48 (KHC-L91)

Kingston DDR2 533mhz dual-chan 512mb x 2, kit (KVR533D2N4K2/1G)
Once again we come back to cost here (damn I feel cheap!). $224 for this kit, vs. $320+ for Corsair/etc. I know it's "value" ram, but so far I haven't read anything bad about it and it has been overclocked successfully to 667mhz. What's the catch then? No flashy heatfansinkthingy? (I'm not so worried about that)


So what do you think? Any pointers to alternative products (save the AMD river crying though) or do you have any info on any negatives about the above products? Mainly I'm just looking for pros/cons on the cooler and the memory, admittedly. 😀
 
No, I'd do the same in your case (If I had a A64 already... lol) and it seems like a pretty stable platform no weaknesses whatsoever.

Hope you have a good brand/type psu and give everything good airflow (through case over cpu) cause prescotts are really sensitive to those compared to northwoods/amds.

pretty expensive though...

Sound advice. Prescotts need pretty decent cooling.
 
Yeup I have an enermax 450w psu if I remember correctly (will have to double check that). After my old one bit the dust I went balls out with that (at the time). 🙂

Thanks for the input guys. Darth, it's not toooooo expensive, looking at about $800 shipped for everything but then again I am closer to the "newest" market releases with this upgrade. When I upgraded to my current setup (same component purchases, sans the hard drive) I spent about $400 for the mobo/ram/proc. That was 3 yrs ago.

Give me an alternative mobo/cpu pair to look at, this upgrade is primarily aimed at helping me do more video editing/processing. The P4 3.4 is $270, while the equiv. A64 is about $260...
 
Show me how the A64 is faster and cheaper, especially since I don't have any 64-bit apps to use on it yet. My primary focus here is improving a/v editing/processing times. I did a little bit of research on that proc but I just don't know if it will serve as useful for what I want to do.
