upgrading to a 939 athy...?

Hi everyone, i currently have a socket 754 amd 64 3000+ that i would like to upgrade. I wanting to get the best bang for the buck here and wanting a highly overclockable processor. I was thinking on going with maybe getting a low end venice core and overclocking the snot out of it. My current processor overclocks to 2250. Not bad but not that great either. The good thing about going to the 939 will be that i will be able to go to an x2 when i want to. I just don't want to spend the money at this point. Also, i have 1.5GB Ram (512x3). With the socket 754 it underclocks your ram which sucks. Anyways with recent price changes what do you guys think is the best way to go? I don't really want a proc that is hit & miss with overclocking. I just wish the new ati chipset was out for the athys so that would be a viable option.

On a side note i thought about getting a pentium d but i would have to replace everything: MB, Proc, & RAM. With this upgrade i will be able to use the same RAM. Also im a big fan of AMD...but the pentium d was tempting because with the type of work i do; dual core would definitly be an asset.

thanks,

probably the epox socket 939 board that anandtech liked with a 3000 venice, pick up another 512 stick and sell your old stuff off, if your keeping your videocard, the msi neo2 plat is the best socket 939 agp board

I also have a s754 chip, the 3200+. I wouldn't recommend upgrading at this point. I run all my games and applications at max settings with flying colors. My advice is to wait next year for the X2's to drop in price, then go for it. There is no reason to get the sam chip on a different socket and spend all that money just to OC a bit higher.

Don't upgrade. At least wait for M2 to show up and the prices for those systems to cheapen up. Your rig will last you more than a while. 2-3 years at least.

Yeah, don't upgrade they are going to come out with a new socket in the next year and like others have said, the prices on the dual core will come down and the applications for them will go up. Stick with it.
