Upgrading to a 780gtx and I have a few questions

1. I have a seasonic G-series 550w power supply, its a quality power supply but I am concerned that if I overclock the 780 then the seasonic may struggle and give me instability, or at the very least have its life span shortened.

What do you guys think? Even an overclocked 780 without voltage alteration of any kind will still pull more watts than one at stock speeds correct?

2. I will be removing my radeon 6970 to sell it and I was going to uninstall catalyst drivers with CCleaner. Should this be done after the video card is removed from my system or before it is removed?

If there is no video card installed, and no video card drivers, the bios should automatically use my motherboards onboard video to display windows right?

I'm asking this last bit because I will be without a video card for about a week and still want to use my PC. I know these are newbish questions but I've been out of the hobby for a while and forgot a lot of stuff, thanks for your help!

1. I think you're fine unless you go to over 1.3v with some huge clocks. Max I've seen with mine so far is right around 570w at the wall with a HX850, so probably 530 or so actual consumption.

That was at 1.4v 1378 core with my i5-4670k @ 5GHz.

2. Doesn't really matter, and yes onboard will be picked up if it's the only display option and it's hooked up.

^ those numbers are of course the extreme. They'd be a bit much for a 550W unit, but luckily, if you're not pumping that much voltage through your CPU and GPU, you'll be closer to 350-400W. You won't have any trouble with your PSU.

3770K 4.5@1.3v here. With a single 780 at 1200mhz and an HX850, the most I could make my system pull from the wall was 450W. That was running IBT max and furmark at the same time. Gaming is more like 400w or less. Keep in mind that this is from the wall too.

You won't have any trouble unless you go insane with clocks and voltages.

Furmark by itself, thats why IBT max was running at the same time.

Looking at the evga superclocked and dual on newegg, both are the same price but one is discounted more, which would you choose? I really dont care too much for rebates, one has a slightly higher price but after rebates they are about even. I have enough money for the former but is wondering if i should just get the cheaper one.

If by dual you mean the Dual FTW, then go for it.

Double BIOS is a good feature to have.

Well i guess i got to wait a bit more, only have money for just the superclocked. Also should I just go for a 770 (which one) and call it day, I game a 1080p and pocketing some money is also nice. I am no longer satisfied with my 7970 and would like to go nvidia.

The thing is, Dual FTW is the card that is right below the classy in EVGA's lineup.

So if you buy it, your chances of getting a higher bin are more.

It had 76.6 ASIC and Samsung memory.

It can do 1241/1800 on the regular Bios without any flashing of secondary Bios or other warranty voiding Stuff.

Sadly, something happened to the card last night and now it throttles even at stock clocks, so I am returning it today.

The SC is not a bad card and the only reason to go FTW is for the Dual Bios and a higher chance of getting a higher binned card.

Not that you cant get lucky with the SC.

Also, the FTW is $494 on Newegg right now after rebate.

Yea I know but the thing is I'd rather just run the card at stock, as I whenj trial and error can ruin something especially when good bucks have been spent. So should i just go with a 770 and upgrade around november, if so which one?

thanks for the input guys, and tg2708 i would go 780gtx hands down, going from a 7970 to 770gtx you probably wont even notice a difference in performance.

im in a similar position im looking at the acx super clock 780 gtx on amazon right now because I got some gift cards over the holidays, the SC is 500.99 while the FTW is 30 bucks extra. and the classified is 60 bucks more than the super clock. Im probably going to end up going for the FTW because I really wont need the extra features the classified has over the FTW. I would be very happy with an extra 100mhz over the FTWs out of box boost performance, but beyond that its all down to getting a golden chip.

I wouldnt even be upgrading to a 780 if I didnt have the gift cards, I was the one always bitching about paying more than $300 for a GPU, and honestly if AMDs prices were msrp I would probably just get a 280x toxic or one of the new aftermarket 290s. This will be my first Nvidia card, Im no fanboy I just always found AMDs offerings more affordable. But I'm pretty excited to be springing for the 780. I've read nothing but glowing reviews about the 780s overclockability and quality and I hope to have it in my system for at least the next year and a half unless maxwell blows my socks off.

Anyway,

EVGA also has the step-up program, which means that if a new gpu comes out or you want to upgrade you have 90 days from time of purchase to pay the difference and step up to a different gpu. Options are nice! Just in case maxwell drops in the next 90 days, I doubt it though..

One more question,

Does motherboard quality have an impact on overclockability of a gpu the same way it does for overclockability of a cpu? Im guessing no because you dont mess with the FSB to OC a gpu..

Yea totally understand and agree, but with a little re-consideration I'll go with the 770. Not that I can't get the 780 but with me not using a 1440p monitor anytime soon and will not be overclocking much etc the 770 seems like a better choice. I'm not happy with my 7970 at all and should have followed my first choice of nvidia when I first built my computer. Not that nvidia don't have its issues but with better driver support and added features it is more worthwhile.
