Upgrading to 64-bit Vista from OEM Version

If I have a "generic" OEM 32-bit version of Vista, can I get the Windows Vista Alternate Media to use my existing Product Key to install the 64-bit version, or does the Alternate Media only work if you bought the Retail package?

i tried to order but micoroft website said i had an oem copy so i wasnt eligible

what i did was torrent a 64bit oem dvd and use my 32bit oem license key, it works for activation, it has been a year now

Mwing thanks for the reply. Did you have an OEM Vista from a manufacturer like Dell or Gateway, or did you buy it yourself from an online store like NewEgg?

It'll work for both. The only limitation for using licence keys for fresh installs from oem manufacturers is that you can only enter the key during windows install and have to use the phone system to activate.

If you can get a hold of the 64bit media, it'll install using your 32bit key.

just out of curiosity, do you have a reference to this? i was wanting to upgrade my newegg OEM to 64 bit, but MS customer service was pretty useless. hell, they even wanted $35 just for an install disc with SP1 slipstreamed (as i have install issues with AMD 690G installs on vanila Vista)

You can't do an upgrade, but the key will work for both the 32bit or 64bit fresh installs. (I have done it on a number of installations using key which came with 32bit media for 64bit and vice versa)

If you have an oem vista from manufacturers then there are a few issues with fresh installs, but my post above covers that.
