Upgrading to 2GB

I want to upgrade to 2GB. If I replace the existing 2x512MB Corsair Value sticks with 2x1GB of the same, will it run at 400Mhz (2x200Mhz) like the existing stuff? My other option is to add a 1GB stick but I'm guessing that would drop the speed to 333Mhz and incur a performance hit?

Rig = S754 MSI K8 Neo w/A64 3200.

TIA.

(edited to remove ambiguity)

I would say it still runs at pc3200. Given that those two sticks of ram are rated for that.

I know it's all PC3200 but will it drop the speed to 333 if I have the mix of 3 sticks? Or are you implying something else? :confused:

it would stay at 400, but will not run in dual channel

Unless the third stick is a 333, then it will run at 333 instead of 400 (you could force it but the ram would probably burn out). since all your sticks are 400 they will all run at 400. The loss of dual channel will be greatly overshadowed by the doubling of ram.

Thanks for all the replies. Think I'll just get one stick seeing as it should make no difference speed-wise.

S754 = No dual channel.

The answer to your question is in your motherboard manual.

I knew I had no dual channel support, should have put that in the OP.

Just checked the manual, two slots of double-sided sticks = DDR400 and three slots of double-sided = DDR333.

Two sticks 4 teh win!

you can use 3 sticks if your 512mb modules are single sided, otherwise you'll drop to DDR 333 w/ 3 dual bank sticks but you can use up to 4 banks of memory in any config and still get DDR 400 on S754.

This question is somewhat on topic. I have a Venice with 2x512 Corsair VS. If I ad another 2 for a total of 4, will there be any noticable drop in performance in games due to 1T/2T? I know because of the newer core it'll run at 400, which is a big part of the performance hit, but what about the command rate?
