I was under the impression that 2x1GB sticks was the way for best performance? Is 4x512MB just as fast?

4x512 will default to DDR 333 speed and 2T.
You probably can get it to run at 400, but you will stay at 2T.
2X1 GB should run at DDR 400 and 1T so at a minimum you take a small performance hit going to 2T.
