Upgrading Tivo DVR questions

I have a Tivo Series One DVR that has a 30 gig hard drive (its Phillips) and I would rather just add a 300 gig hard drive instead of replacing the 30 gig and adding two 120 gig drives. It used to be there was like a 137 gig limit to drives that you put in. Is it possible to put in a drive that big and use it all, and how? Where can I find the guide to do this? Of note I also want to keep the shows I have on the drive. :wine:

Also, is it possible for me to add a way to connect via ethernet instead of the phone line? If so I would drop my phone and live off my broadband connection.

The big thing is whether I should buy a 300 gig hard drive right now, or should I wait out getting two 120 gig drives. The 300 is a deal, but it is pointless if upgrading my tivo will prevent me from using more than 137 gigs.

I must say two things after searching quite a bit on this subject. :disgust:

1. I am surprised that no one has created an IRC channel to help people on this. Yes there are two Tivo channels (from what I could find) but one is for those who are noobs just buying a Tivo for the first time, and the second group is a anti-social group of l33t Tivo developers who have little interest helping anyone with these pesky problems. Shouldn't there be a middle ground IRC channel devoted to helping people do Tivo Upgrades?

2. It seems there are three different groups (or paths) to follow to upgrade your Tivo via the tivocommunity forums. These groups have made advancements but seem to have BOTH little communication AND little awareness what the other group has been doing. If only they would get together it seems to me they might be able to connect some dots together. For example weaknees has a VERY simple interface :) and ease of upgrade (and guide) while they haven't implemented :( the upgraded code/kernel/functions that PTV provides (as well as more efficient reading of space. :) Or something like that). PTV on the other hand is much more difficult to do . If they got together they could rock.

For example, I upgrade my Tivo using Weaknees with 2 * 200gig hard drives. It works and all, but doesn't see past the 137 gig limit of the old kernel stuff. So it only sees 344 hours (yes, there is a discussion there about the difference of different types of GB or Gb :frown: , something about that ), when I could have done PTV and been seeing something like 450-500 hours. Now I am kinda stuck. Ive added shows, but there is no guide on how to update that to LBA48 kernel (if I recall correctly) to see past the 137 Gb barrier (without erasing my shows). Sigh...
