Upgrading the processor on a new MB

Just wondering if I were to buy a brand new motherboard like an ABIT KT7 or an ASUS A7V, what could I upgrade it to if I wasn't satisfied with the performance ?

Say they release a 1.4 Ghz chip, will that motherboard still support it ?

Also, if I were to overclock my Duron, do I need to fiddle with the hardware on the MB or do both support SW overclocking ?

Thanks !

following history, motherboard manufacturers will support future chips based on the same process as the current chips.

At pricewatch right now there are vendors selling the 1.2 Ghz Tbird. So safe money would say that the 1.4 Ghz processor would probably be compatible with the motherboards you mentioned.

So the short answer to your question is YES.

I am not so sure ctowle is correct. 1250Mhz may be it.
Cut & past from Toms.

This brings us to the simple conclusion that AMD will need to increase the bus clock in order to get more than 950 MHz out of Duron and more than 1250 MHz out of Athlon. The next Athlon processor will probably be an Athlon 1330, running at 133 MHz bus clock x 10. This could also mean that you will require new platforms for the next batch of Athlons, since I doubt that the current ones are able to support 133 MHz EV6-bus. Of course that's wild speculation on my part, but it sounds pretty reasonable.
