can anyone point me in the right direction on to which memory i'll need. also how can i tell whats in my computer now (2x1gb or 1 2gb stick) and does anyone have any installation tips on how to take the install the the ram [im assuming i got to open up the bottom pannel?

Once you have the bottom off, the installation is straightforward if you have ever replaced RAM in a laptop before. Apple almost always does matched pairs, so if your MBP has 2GB then it is 2*1GB.

You need a Phillips #00 which you can find in any precision screwdriver kit on the planet.

Walmart will sell them yes. Stanley makes a really nice set of precision screwdrivers that I like, costs $7 or so for the 6 screwdrivers.

If he is replacing the RAM, then he shouldn't need to touch the Hard Drive.
