So I'm looking at putting together a machine or rather more specifically, upgrading my current rig. You can see my current main system in my sig but for those who don't wish to avert their eyes to that, it's based off an i7 920, 6gb of DDR3, and that's all that really matter for the sake of this thread.

I am basically looking to upgrade my core components as I can reuse my SSD, power supply, etc so all I really need ideas for are a motherboard and CPU (I can figure out RAM all by my big self).

A couple prefaces:

CAN be used equipment (as it's often cheaper, it's almost preferred, even)
Can be a barebones PC base
Can be a gen or two old
Must not perform worse than what I currently have (duh)
Must be an Intel based machine, preferably no lower than an i5

Cost should be reasonable, I don't want to break the bank with this, otherwise I'd go new and wouldn't be here right now. I'd like a "K" series CPU as it's unlocked but that is not a requirement.

So what's good out there for used Intel CPU's that I can base my system around?

Have you talked to Burpo yet about upgrading your current X58 rig to a 6-core Westmere CPU and overclocking it? I think that would be the most cost-efficient solution, if you already have the board and RAM for it.

Yeah, I traveled down that road and now here I sit with a 6 Core CPU that won't work work in my motherboard outside of one random working boot. So, newer hardware it is!

That's bizarre.. Evidently the AsRock super computer board, isn't so super, or that Xeon has issues. If you bought it on ebay, you can send it back for a refund.

I did find this article about overclocking that board, and it does seem to be a bit trickier than the rest when it comes to voltage settings. Maybe it will help you?

At this point I feel like I've waited too long to send it back, I'm just going to hope I can find a buyer (I'll list it in the FS section here for a good price) and move on. Looking ahead to newer silicon pastures!

Obligatory..."Do you live near a Mircocenter?"

The 6600K seems like the most reasonable option if you don't want to spend a ton of money. Are you willing to buy used? Maybe you could score a good deal on a used 4970K.

No Microcenter nearby :(

And yes, I am willing to go used if it's a good bang for the buck.
