upgrading system, need help choosing a CPU

a friend of mine want to upgrade his mobo, cpu and ram

it is between an A64 3400+ and an opteron 148, what do you all say?

also, if you choose the 148, please recommend a mobo

I'd personally go with the 3400+. Just I would hold out a little longer for the new chipset motherboards if you can.

No, no, don't wait for socket 939. It's going to be months before prices come down to reasonable levels, if ever! The A64 3400 is an awesome processor, and since there are already nForce3-250 motherboards available for it, tell him that's what he wants to get. The Opterons require a motherboard that costs twice as much money, and registered ram (more expensive, doesn't overclock all that well).
