Upgrading SSd in PC..Installation Instructions..

My pc has an 80gb intel ssd from a couple of years ago that is now full (never thought that would happen). I just bought a new 256gb Samsung 840 pro to replace it. I opened the ssd and there is basically nothing in there but the ssd and the migration software.

My goal is to copy the existing ssd over to the new one in all respects, then to install the new one and have my pc use the new one as the 'c' drive which is where all applications as well as the operating system currently sit.

Is there somewhere I can get detailed instructions on how to do the data migration from existing to new drive, and then what i might need to do to the pc itself to recognize and then boot from the new ssd? I'm a little leery of just 'winging' it, was hoping the ssd would come with precise directions on how to get this done. Also will I need any additional hardware or cables. I have an extra sata cable, that is all.

Thanks.

It is a 256gb 840 pro and it has some sort of cloning software. I bought an extra sata cable for the install just in case. Is it as simple as hooking the 840 pro up to the pc via sata cable (what about power or should I have extra power cable hookups in the pc already) and running the software? Will the pc recognize the new ssd as another drive or do I have to make other changes (since the existing one will still be running all applications including os)?

Apologies for the newbie questions. I have done a lot of pc component replacements but I don't want to mess this one up...

The pc is a core i7 running win7 64 bit.

Yes it is just that simple. Plug it in and run the migration software. Samsung's version of ghost (or ghost in general) isnt very user friendly compared to intel's migration tool, but it does have an instructional video. You really cant mess it up if you follow the instructions. Once it is clone you just remove the old drive.

So, what you plan on doing with that old drive?

Thanks. I may try to sell the old ssd, which is 80gb and 2 yrs old from intel (not sure of the exact model number but can obviously find out). I never thought I would fill up 80gb with applications and operating system, but as is often the case with storage things just fill up!

I bet I could clear 20GB of junk off of it. It is amazing what "disk cleanup" wont actually clean up. Every couple weeks my little batch routine will free up about 2GB just from stuff the web browsers dont delete when you tell it to "clear everything".

I'm sure you are right, but I want more 'overhead' room. I should have asked how to free up more space beforehand, but eventually I would have to have gotten a bigger ssd.
