Upgrading soon (hopefully)... What do you think?

Looks like I might finally be able to upgrade my system. These are my current plans:

purchase @ newegg.com
MSI K7N420 PRO (nForce)
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Antec SX1040B (w/ 400W)

purchase @ crucial.com
512MB DDR SDRAM

I'd like to get the same case but with the 300W PS (cost reasons), but I'm not sure about using that with the system.

I already have everything else I need in my current (466celeron) system. I'll probably take the 8GB out of my old 200MHz system and put it in my current system to make a dedicated Linux system.

BTW: Try convincing me all you want not to get an nForce based system. I've been drooling over it since it was anounced at Computex this summer.

If you don't need the onboard video, I would wait a week or so and get the nforce 415-D. It will probably be less expensive. MSI and Asus are supposed to release theirs at the end of the month.

Is there anything solid saying that it'll be relesed then? I have to wait at least 2 weeks because that's when I'll have the money, so that's not a big deal. I wasn't planning on using the onboard video, but if it's there I may use it eventually. If I the 415-D is available when I make the purchase, I'll go for it and save the extra money. Otherwise, I'm fine with having it. I'm not a big gamer, so I don't need anything fancy for video.

nforce has great potential... but, as it is now its not that great of a performer.

check out this article at toms hardware guide (it reviews about 14 boards, 2 of them nforce) link

After chipsets are announced, there is still at least a month of waiting to do. It's going to take a while for nForce 415-D to arrive. KT266A was a drop-in replacement for KT266, and new boards took a while to arrive.

Since ram is expensive, you may be better off getting 256mb ram right now. But again, ram prices may increase even more. Since ram is so expensive, take a look and see if you can get better ram for just slightly more; Crucial used to be cheap, but not anymore. Look @ mushkin ram, corsair ram, kingmax ram, etc.

Don't get nForce because there is a problem when you load a third stick of ram into the dimm slot. All the ram defaults to PC1600. In addition, KT266A boards such as the dragon+ also come with good sound, lan, etc. Dragon+ even has raid 🙂

The video on the nForce sux. Better off getting a video card of your choice; I recommend GTS-V and Ti200.

Right now, the Crucial 512 sticks are using Samsung chips, not MT, if you care. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Samsung but I don't know if it overclocks as well as the Micron stuff. I recently got some Corsair PC 2400, running it Cas2 @145Mhz FSB.
