Hi all. I'm looking to upgrade the main components of my PC in the near future, December/January.
Current Setup:
P3-667 EB (at 667, I dont overclock much, I might do in the future though)
Gigabyte GA-6VX7 4x
Maxtor 30 Gb 7200rpm
ATi Rage 128 Fury (32 Mb)
Soon to be (ie: tonight) Win2000.
I am looking to upgrade so that I have a fater system and so I will actually be able to play games. At the moment the most demanding game I have is Max Payne. Its runs fine (just) at 640 x 480. I dont mind playing games at low res, I'm used to it.
Obvioulsly if I intend playing games in the future I will have to upgrade the graphics card.
I will upgrade to something like an Athlon XP (middle of the range at the time of upgrade, so perhaps the 1600+?), with 512Mb of RAM (seems pointless not to, as I'll have to buy DDR memory anyway). I intended getting something like one of the original Radeon DDRs. Gaming performance isnt an extreme issue for me. I have many hobbies, and while I can justify getting a decent CPU (as its performance has an effect on most tasks), a £250 GPU is really out of the question, so no GF3 or Radeon8500 (although I am tempted).
I have just been offered a GF2 GTS (32mb DDR version) for about £65. Those are all the details I have at the moment. More to come (manufacturer etc). Obviously its a much better card than I have at the moment. My question is, will it be able to keep up with a nice fast CPU, or will I just be throwing money at something that will be an extreme bottleneck in my system.
I realise that its not going to be cutting edge. Thats not a problem (remember the card I have been using for 2+ years...). All I am wondering is the sort of performance I can expect.
Also, what is driver support like for the GF2 GTS under Windows 2000?
Sorry for the large post, and Thanks a lot.
