Upgrading slot 1 motherboard cpu

Heya, I have a older asus p2bf motherboard, and I was hoping to upgrade the processor. It is a slot 1 type mobo. I am having a hard time finding good deals on cpus for this slot though. I was hoping to get around 1ghz or so, but the prices I was finding where pretty high. Would it be easier and cheaper to just buy a new motherboard and cpu?

The reason for the upgrade is because I just got a copy of win 2000 server, and I would like to play around with it on my home network.

Thanks much for the help

You can get a combo of mobo/Athlon 1ghz or more for the price of a PIII 1~1.26, but you can get 2X the mhz for a little more $$.

yes i think it would be cheaper to just get a new cpu/mobo. as previously mentioned... u can get a 1ghz athlon w/mobo for under $100 prolly. the slot1 1ghz cpu (if exists) will be like around $100+ itself. changing ur platform will be cheaper... but also requires more work on ur part.

i heard that the asus p2b series of motherboards have problems with 10x and up multiplier settings. anyone confirm this?

With W2K server having at least 256 MB RAM (preferably 384) is much more important than having a fast CPU -- it will run fine for light webserving or file sharing with something as slow as a p2-266.

Note if you decide to go that Athlon route to make sure that your power supply can handle it, otherwise it might be better to go with a slocket or cheap / used socket370 board and a celeron.

I have an ABIT BE6 II that I like very much and wanted to get another year or so out of. On e-Bay you can get a new slotket for around $10 anytime and if you watch for a Dutch auction of a lot, for even less. A retail 1 GHz celeron II is around $55 dollars at a number of places and on the ABIT which allows FSB steps of 1 MHz the Celeron is rock stable at 110 to 112 MHz. In other words for less than $75 you can have a 1.1 GHz computer. I do not know your MB, but I assume it has a FSB of 112 MHz. If not you can run at 100MHz and have a 1GHz with no overclocking.

Ok I think I might try the slocket thing, I can not find any websites that sell them though. I heard asus makes a slotket, or is ebay the only place you can buy them?

Thanks much

Make sure to buy good slotkets like the ones from MSI, Iwill and Abit. They should have jumpers for different FSB settings (Auto, 66,100,133mhz), voltage adjustments down to at least 1.5v and one for PPGA/FCPGA processors ( some even have a Cyrix setting).
They should be around $20.

The best Slotket is the one from Powerleap. It seems to be the most compatible since ithas its own voltage regulator that bypasses the mobo and the newer ones are compatible with FCPGA-2 CPU's (0.13m, Tualatin-based). The downside is they are the most expensive. You are lucky if you get one for $30; their buying price seems to be around $50 (almost the cost of a motherboard). I got mine for $20+shipping🙂.
