upgrading ram

If I am trying to get a good overclock out of an E8600 cpu should I upgrade from cheap G.Skill DDR2-800 2x4gb? Thanks.

More than likely, that would not be necessary.

The whole point behind getting an E8600 is generally that is has a higher multiplier, allowing you to get farther than you normally would due to FSB limitations...
Now of course, if you aren't planning on 5+ GHz OCs, this isn't an issue on a decent mobo really anyway.

Have you tested to see how far your DDR2-800 OCs?
I imagine it'll do at the worst around DDR2-900, which means you can run 10x450 for 4.5 GHz worst case scenario 😉

Even if your RAM wouldn't overclock one MHz, you still have DDR2-800 (400 MHz), which means 4 GHz.

+1

I still buy DDR2-800 ram 99% of the time and have yet to find any that won't hit 450+ with mild voltage increases. Most of the 4-4-4-12 @ 1.8-2.0v ram will run nearly 500 if you set it to 5-5-5-15 with 2.0-2.1v or so. The difference in timings isn't at all noticeable from anything I've seen yet.

Just be careful of the DDR2-800 ram that has timings of 5-5-5-15 or 6-6-6-18 @ 2.0v or higher as it's usually lower binned 800 or already over clocked 667 ram.

Wait two weeks and see if it still works. Crucial is RMA city. These are a very nice value right now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820227267

Heya,

Totally depends on the settings of your overclock. Based on the question itself, I'm going to go out on a limb and expect you to say something under 4ghz, or perhaps an exclamation and question about "I can get 4ghz??".

Your RAM is likely fine to use.

Very best,

n7 and Gillbot hit it dead on the head.

DDR2-800 corresponds to 400fsb which means your (10x multi) e8600 will run at 4GHz before you have to even overclock your RAM.

And as long as your G.Skill RAM is rated for CAS 5 @ 1.8/1.9V it should easily stretch to DDR2-900 (450fsb so 4.5GHz cpu speed) with a slight increase in voltage.

If, for some strange reason, it doesn't allow you to hit the CPU overclock you want, simply use a memory divider below 1:1 to clock down your memory speed relative to the fsb.
