Upgrading RAM in a MacBook

Right now I'm using the basic first-gen MacBook w/ 512MB DDR2-667 RAM, with both slots filled for dual-channel operation.

Would it be worth it to upgrade to 1GB? (2 sticks x 512MB - what would I do with the RAM I'm replacing...)
Does anyone know if OS X needs more than 512MB of ram to run smoothly?

Be careful, Apple designs are notorious for being extremely picky about what RAM is used. If you aren't willing to sever a limb for geniune Apple you should order from crucial.com's memory selector so you have a guarantee thst it will work.

I'd recommend getting 2GB ( 2x1GB )

I am on my friends black macbook which has 2GB it runs very clean.

DaveSimmons it's not that hard to find ram compatible with the macbook my friend ordered some off newegg pretty easily.
