I have read mixed reports of ram being able to go o 8 gigs in my model, do I have the proper firmware?

If so, what kind of ram should I be looking for?

According to LowEndMac, you're stuck at 4GeeBees.

4GBs isn't too bad though, that's what my Air and my work laptop have, both get the job done.

Ok, then stick in 8 gigs. If you click on Memory in System Profiler, it should give you the speed of the existing RAM IIRC, just match that.

4 gigs seems fine, maybe I wouldn't need 8 gigs. I haven't priced ram in forever so hopefully it is still cheap

I got 16GB for my MBP last fall for under $100 and I didn't price shop at all. It seemed like a fair price so I got it. It made a HUGE difference. Crucial.com is showing 8GB at <$70 for your model, so I would imagine you can find it ~$50.
