Upgrading RAM for Compaq V2410US

ok so i was looking at memory at the two most prestigious memory companys (IMO)-Kingston and Crucial. Kingston had my exact model number for my computer, while Crucual had the V2000 series, which is what my computer is, but more specifically, the V2410US. Now as i have figured out on the internet i have two slots, both have 256MB in them equaling 512MB. I need more though. So i want to purchase a gig.

MY first question is, i would like to get the Crucial memory because its $30 cheaper, but they only had it for the V2000 series, so i was a little worried about it being the right one,

also these prices are from the official website so maybe i can find it cheaper somewhere...any suggestions? I will try a google/froogle search and ebay search and newegg.com search...

Also, i know this was true on the macs back in the day, if i take out one of thost 256 MB of RAM, do i lose any information on my computer? I know i did on my imac for some reason i think, maybe i didnt, maybe im mistaken, whatever,...nonetheless, will i?

So basically i am set to have 1 gig and then 256MB in the other slot, totalling...1280

any other advice would be greatly appreciated!

You're mistaken. DRAM is volatile memory, just shutting off the power on the computer erases all its contents. Only the hard drive stores your data such that it's saved when power is shut off or components removed. You may have done something unrelated at the same time you removed the memory, which resulted in losing your data on the hard drive, but it wasn't caused by the memory module being removed.

Laptops are sometimes picky about what memory you install. PC3200 modules ought to work, but PC2700 would be more of a guarantee.

The V2405US is pretty much the same laptop as the 2410, as far as the mainboard specs.

You should be able to use any ram greater than or equal to your ram in speed, as long as it is the right type (ddr so-dimm, your your case, IIRC). However, laptops especially may have a hard time with mixing different ram chips, so try to match speeds as much as you can.

Personal story:
My laptop (HP ze4610us) works great with it's stock 256mb ram(samsung) + an aftermarket 256mb ram made by Kingmax (might have that wrong). However, it only works with the kingmax in slot 1 and the samsung in slot 2. When I tried booting with samsung in slot 1 (default) and simply adding the kingmax in the second slot, it refused to boot. So, case in point, laptops may get picky with ram and doing random things that you don't -think- should change anything just might.
