Upgrading PSU in new HP

Greetings,

Just bought a pre-built computer for my Dad as I can only seem to built mid-level computers for cheaper than dell and HP and my dad wanted a good cheap computer.

It's the following specs

HP Pavilion p6270z PC
• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• AMD Athlon(TM) X4 620 quad-core processor [2.6GHz, 2MB L2, up to 4000MT/s bus]
• 4GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [2 DIMMs]
• FREE UPGRADE! 640GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive from 500GB
• Integrated graphics - ATI Radeon HD 4200
• LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
• 15-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB, audio
• No TV Tuner
• Integrated 7.1 channel sound with front audio ports
• HP multimedia keyboard and HP optical mouse
• Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
• No additional security software
• HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Has a stock 300w PSU...my brother wants to play some decently demanding games.

Can I upgrade the PSU with any standard PSU or does it require some sort of slimline type?

Your brother wants to play games? I thought you got it for your dad? 🙂

As for the PSU, size matters. It has to fit. I would remove it and take it to an electronic parts store and match the size and connectors.

Its a standard ATX12V (or ATX/EPS12V) unit, but unless you intend to upgrade something, there isn't any point in replacing a perfectly good unit.

My Dad wanted it. My brother wants to game on it and will pay a bit to upgrade it.

I intend on dropping a mid level Graphics card in it, I doubt a 300w (even seasonic) PSU will power an HD4850 for more than 20 minutes before browning out.

Step on will be to toss a 500w earthwatt in there whenever I see one for cheap.
